The world is celebrating it’s love for running today.

Wednesday, June 7 is Global Running Day, a day to get moving and simply enjoy a good run.

It may sound silly to have a day dedicated to celebrate running since chances are the only ones to take part are most likely runners, and this is an activity they do all the time.

So what exactly is Global Running Day?

It’s a “day for people around the world to celebrate the joys of running.” There are currently 839,722 people from 171 countries participating in the day.

The organization that founded the annual running day is also on a mission to get more kids excited about fitness and embrace running, with the goal this year to get 1 million children to participate. So far 295,813 kids are on board. Last year more than 670,000 children were park of the Million Kid Run.

Global Running Day is celebrated annually, on the first Wednesday in June, with the very first one celebrated on June 1, 2016 and has over 2.5 million people pledge to participate.

You might have heard of National Running Day and might be wondering the difference. Global Running Day is actually National Running Day, the name just changed. Nation Running Day has been celebrated since 2009.

There are some charities that also take part, and those who pledge to run can also raise money for a charity.

So how does one participate?

Whether you proudly proclaim to be a runner, run as an occasional form exercise or to clear your mind on occasion, or are looking for yet another way to stay on the right side of your fitness track, then all you have to go is tie those sneakers and hit the road.

Of course what you will want to do first is pledge that you are running at GlobalRunningDay.org

Runners can enter in their name, where they are from, if they are older than 18 years of age, and how many miles they pledge to run.

Where to run is up to the individual.

All you have to do is get out there and go for a run, but those who don’t want to run solo can use this as a fun way to meet up with friends and go for a group run.

The Global Running Day website features bibs that can be personalized and printed, perfect for a fun run with your friends, as well as a badge that can be shared on Facebook.

There are also lots of events happening in New York, New Jersey, and many other states like California and Florida.

Those in New York include open runs with New York Road Runners (NYRR) and the Reebok Community Run with Runner’s World. Find events near you at the Global Running Day website.

What are you waiting for? Get up and go, and enjoy your run today knowing that you are part of a movement celebrated with others from around the world that all have one thing in common: the love of running.
