We all know the power of a social media campaign that goes viral (We all remember the the ALS Ice bucket Challenge). And this one will surely melt your heart. A woman started a Facebook even asking pet owners to send pictures of dogs to cheer up her friend’s 16-year-old son who is battling cancer.

And now Ro Joe’s event, “Photo Doggies for Anthony” has gone viral.

“Hi all, my friend Kristen Lyons has her son Anthony at Phoenix Children’s Hospital,” she writes. “They make him smile. I thought if I create this event, you can post a picture of your dog to help make him smile. His mom shows them to him and he smiles.“

And it started raining cats and dogs.

Over 900,000 Facebook guests have joined the campaign and approximately half a million doggie photos have been posted since Sunday.

Anthony is currently receiving chemotherapy treatment for his acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He was admitted back into the hospital January 2 and will undergo chemo for a week. Dogs “make him smile,” as some days he guests the canine visitors. Facebook users have also photos kitty pics.

“I am amazed at how quickly this event has blown up and it makes me so happy to know how many people enjoy their pets as much as Anthony and I do,” Lyons wrote. “Your pets have brightened our days so much and it just shows you the power of pet therapy and animal healing.
