Although bulletproof coffee has become the trend among new wave health and fitness enthusiast, you just want to dodge the bullet on this one.

According to this trend, “bulletingproofing” your morning consists of ditching a healthy, balanced breakfast for just a cup of coffee. Grass-fed butter and coconut oil (that contains MCT oil—medium chain triglycerides) is supposed to be added to the cup of bulletproof java in an attempt to jolt productivity and increase weight loss.

Bulletproof coffee is designed, according its creator, to “supercharge your brain function and create effortless fat loss with no cravings.” The coffee is said to increase energy, while burning fat and building muscle.

Dave Asprey created this trend, after he sought refuge from locals at 18,000 feet elevation in negative 10 degree Fahrenheit while climbing in Tibet. He was given yak butter tea, which he claims, “literally rejuvenated” him. He then went on to create the company, Bulletproof Executive, and thus the trend began.

According to Aspery, the recipe for calls you to:

  • Brew 1 cup (8 oz.) of coffee using filtered water, just off the boil, with 2 1/2 heaping tablespoons freshly ground Bulletproof® Upgraded™ Coffee Beans. (French Press is easiest.)
  • Add in 1-2 tablespoons Bulletproof® Upgraded™ Brain Octane™ to the hot coffee (It’s STRONG – start with 1 tsp. and work up over several days).
  • Add 1-2 tablespoons grass-fed, unsalted butter or ghee
  • Mix it all in a blender for 20-30 seconds until it is frothy like a foamy latte

While holistic health enthusiasts believe that saturated fat is a superfood, rather than being heart unhealthy, this trend medically might and not be all its worked up to be.

According to research published in the Journal of Nutrition, the kind of fat found in coconut and palm oil may have health benefits, including weight loss. Grass-fed butter contains a healthier omega 6 to omega 3 ratios than the conventional kind. It has also been linked to protection against cancer.  However, grass-fed butter contains the long-chains of fat that are harmful for our health.

However, if you used milk instead of butter, you would be consuming more vitamins, minerals, and protein.
