It was a close race, but Meb Keflezighi crossed the finish line in 2:08.37 to become the first American male to win the Boston Marathon since 1983. He edged out Kenya’s Wilson Chebet in the last few miles, who at one point was only six seconds behind.

Keflezighi ran mile 25 under five minutes at 4:59. Incredible.

Keflezighi got emotional after he crossed the finish line. From USA TODAY Sports’ Kelly Whiteside on the scene:

He looked up to the sky, then kissed the ground three times. He took a bow, then emotion won out as he put his hands over his face and broke into tears.
